Big Jim Secret Agent – 3 Chatons Promotion

This French promotion dates from 1980–81 and was run with Barquettes 3 Chatons. The prizes were substantial: 4,300 Big Jim “Secret Agent” figures, plus 300 Lazervettes and Big Jim helicopters. Contemporary listings of the campaign confirm that 3 Chatons used Big Jim as one of its major competition prizes during this period.

For collectors, the interesting point is the choice of the Secret Agent version of Big Jim, shown here with his disguise case, alongside two of the line’s most desirable vehicles: the Lazervette and the helicopter. The advert captures the moment when the French Big Jim range had fully embraced espionage, gadgets and high-tech vehicles rather than the earlier sports or Western themes.

It is also a good example of how Mattel pushed Big Jim beyond the toy aisle: the character appeared directly on food packaging and in national prize promotions, turning an everyday box of biscuits into another piece of the Big Jim universe.

Design Big Jim’s New Look

Published in France in 1981, this Mattel competition invited young fans to become Big Jim’s stylist. The idea was simple: cut out the entry form, design a complete new outfit directly on the figure, colour it, and send it in before 15 May 1981.

The jury included fashion and graphic-design specialists, and the winning designs were judged on originality and inventiveness. The prizes were unusually ambitious for a toy promotion, ranging from Big Jim figures and outfits to a motorbike, with the top prize being a seven-day trip to Disneyworld in Florida for the winner and two accompanying people.

For collectors, this is a fascinating piece of Big Jim marketing. Instead of presenting a finished product, Mattel asked children to expand the line themselves. It perfectly suited Big Jim’s modular concept: one body, dozens of identities, and an endless wardrobe of adventures.
