Global Passport

Introduced with Mattel’s Global Command range in 1984, the Big Jim Global Passport was much more than a simple paper insert. Designed as a personal mission passport, it allowed young agents to enter the new futuristic world of Big Jim and collect the Mission Stamps supplied with toys from the Global Command series.

In 1984, Mattel gave Big Jim one of the most radical transformations in the history of the line. The familiar adventurer was repositioned within a new futuristic espionage universe built around two opposing organisations: Global Command, led by Big Jim, and the sinister Condor Force, commanded by Professor OBB.

The Global Passport was created as part of this new concept. Rather than functioning as an accessory for the action figure itself, it was intended for the child who owned the toys. Its opening page reproduced the conventions of a real passport, with spaces for a name, signature and photograph. The multilingual presentation reinforced the international identity of Global Command and gave the object the appearance of an official field document.

Its real function, however, was tied directly to the play system of the range. Mattel developed the Global Command line around individual missions, and the passport provided a place to record them. Contemporary collector documentation notes that the passport was intended to receive the Mission Stamps supplied with products from the series, effectively turning each new figure, vehicle or playset into another completed operation in Big Jim’s worldwide campaign.

This explains the unusual pages illustrated with members of the Big Jim universe. They were not simply decorative. The booklet was conceived as an interactive record of participation in the Global Command organisation, extending the fiction beyond the figures and into the hands of the owner.

The passport also reflects the broader change taking place within Big Jim during this period. The 1984–1986 range introduced redesigned characters, new uniforms, science-fiction equipment and a much clearer division between heroes and villains. Global Command included figures such as Big Jim, Astros, Dr. Alec and Colonel Kirk, while Professor OBB’s Condor Force included Vektor, Kobra and Baron Fangg.

Mattel supported this new universe with dedicated vehicles and playsets, including the Command Mobile and the Global Command Center, both associated with the 1984 range in collector databases. The passport belonged to the same attempt to make the line feel like a coherent organisation rather than a simple assortment of action figures.

Soon more... Come back later.

Real heroes always live great adventures.
