Coloring Books
Explore vintage Big Jim coloring books inspired by Mattel’s action figure universe, from early sports-themed publications to adventure stories featuring Big Jim, his friends and later P.A.C.K. characters.

Published in the United States in 1973, the Big Jim Color and Activity Book, reference 1276, was issued by Whitman / Western Publishing Company, Inc. under license from Mattel. The copyright page carries © 1973 Mattel, Inc., while the cover shows Big Jim in a basketball uniform, the reference number 1276 and an original retail price of 39¢.
Rather than a conventional comic, the book combines full-page coloring illustrations with simple games and activities, placing Big Jim in sports, training, driving and motorcycle-related scenes.

The Shuffleboard activity turns a simple sheet of paper and four checkers into a tabletop game. Players draw a triangular scoring area at each end of the table, then flick their checkers from behind the line, aiming to land them inside the opponent’s scoring zones. Each player shoots two checkers per inning, and the game lasts five innings. Scores are added after each round, while knocking an opponent’s checker out of a scoring area is allowed. The activity reflects the practical, hands-on character of the Big Jim book, combining drawing, simple construction, dexterity and competitive play rather than functioning only as a coloring exercise.

Big Jim & His Friends Coloring Book was published in the United States in 1975 by Whitman / Western Publishing Company under license from Mattel. It carries publication reference 1069 and an original price of 39¢. The cover depicts Big Jim and his companions aboard the Jungle Truck, reflecting the outdoor adventure identity of the mid-1970s line. Here again, 1069 is the Whitman book reference rather than a Mattel product number.
