Published in 1976 by Whitman under license from Mattel, Big Jim and Big Jack Play Figures with Sports Outfits, reference 1988, is a vintage paper play set based on the original Big Jim universe. The book features cut-out figures of Big Jim and Big Jack together with interchangeable sports clothing and equipment representing several athletic disciplines, including baseball, basketball, football and track-style outfits. Its colorful artwork closely follows the sporting identity that defined Mattel’s early Big Jim collection, with the familiar three-star emblem appearing on several uniforms. Unlike a conventional Mattel action figure set, reference 1988 is a paper-doll activity book produced by Western Publishing’s Whitman imprint, making it a distinctive licensed Big Jim vintage item from 1976.
