906 Il Tesoro di Geronimo
Released in Italy around 1978–1979—collector sources differ slightly on the exact date—Il Tesoro di Geronimo was a Mattel board game for two to four players aged six to twelve, developed as an extension of the Big Jim universe. Its storyline drew on the conventions of the western and treasure-hunt genres, featuring a portrayal of Geronimo and Native American peoples typical of 1970s popular culture, but now widely regarded as stereotypical. For Mattel, the commercial objective was to move beyond action figures and build a broader brand ecosystem combining characters, vehicles, accessories, and board games. This strategy was particularly effective in Italy, where Big Jim had been distributed since 1973 and enjoyed greater longevity than in the United States. By 1979, the Italian catalogue presented the character in multiple roles—including adventurer, cowboy, spy, pirate, and astronaut—to generate repeat purchases and maintain the interest of young consumers. Il Tesoro di Geronimo therefore represents a clear example of Mattel’s diversification strategy in the Italian market and is now valued primarily as a collectible and a piece of toy-industry heritage.
Real heroes always live great adventures.
