5140 Gyrocopter

Released in 1982, the Big Jim Gyrocopter and Detection Backpack by Mattel, reference 5140, belongs to the European Spy series. This vintage equipment set transforms Big Jim into an airborne reconnaissance agent equipped for surveillance missions over remote or hostile territory. The box contains a wearable gyrocopter assembly with rotor, support frame, harness and control handles, together with a separate detection backpack featuring a rotating radar-style dish and instrument panel. The modular accessories were designed for Mattel’s 10-inch Big Jim figures, which were not included in the package. Its unusual combination of personal flight equipment and electronic detection gear makes reference 5140 one of the more distinctive technical accessories in the early-1980s Big Jim collection.
