2686 Space Mission

Mattel Big Jim reference 2686, officially known as the Space Mission Set or Mission dans l’Espace, was released in Europe around 1982, although some databases date it to 1979. This vintage Big Jim accessory set equipped Secret Agent 004 for a futuristic lunar mission with a silver suit, helmet, boots and a large mechanical space apparatus featuring articulated limbs, scoop and gripping tools. A notable feature is its origin: Mattel reused and adapted components from the Supernaut Power-Limbs Pak, reference 6343, originally created for the Major Matt Mason space range and introduced in the 1969 Mattel catalog. The Big Jim version therefore combines 1980s espionage styling with tooling derived from Mattel’s late-1960s space toys, making reference 2686 an unusual crossover within the vintage Big Jim collection.
